South Sudan Challenges

Wow!

I was prompted to begin this blog on the social/political impact of geekie/techie stuff (and vice-versa) by a fairly innocuous question on one of the Youtube help forums : Now South-Sudan is an country, Youtube must make it at "Country:"?

The obvious answer is "yes"; but then I started to think about what needs to be done to enable this to happen.

ICANN needs to create separate new TLD's for North and South Sudan.

The old .sd TLD then has to be placed with a neutral registrar until all the domains registered under it are retired (given the ongoing antagonism between the two parts of Sudan this is a MUST).

This step alone is likely to take months at least.

Under which areas' control do previously designated ISP's and IP's now sit?

As each new country evolves its' own laws and legal system, then the internet (and internet companies such as Google) needs to be able to differentiate between the two.

This situation really presents the Internet community with one of it's toughest challenges yet, lets hope we all rise to the challenge.
